The End of the Copy Era?

15 June 2010 One Comment

Our study of Ibanez Mandolin serial numbers has begun to yield some interesting information. We can break down the production of Ibanez Mandolins into two main phases:

1) The Copy Era: Making of F-5, A-5, and A style mandolins to emulate Gibson models, started circa 1975 and ending some time in 1978.

2) The Original Era: The original design 528 and 529 mandolins were made from 1981 to 1983.

The submission of pictures of H784392 gives us the latest serial number for a copy mandolin (A-5 style, model 522) in the log so far, and suggests that August 1978 is the end of the copy era for Ibanez.

I inherited a f5 mandolin from my dad. He had it since the middle 70,s. It’s a Ibanez, made within the copy era. It has abalony inlays on the fretboard, gold plated tail piece, gold plated tuners with mother of pearl knobs, a pick guard that matched the top of the peghead. The body is, I think a sunburst finish, but is a carmel color with a darker surround. The only number I can find is inside, SN22. ProSound Music Center, Denver Co. This instrument is in prestine condition. I would like some more info on the great instrument if there is any to be found. If you would like pictures for your website, I can arrange that also. Thanx. Kerry
