I too have just finished a good clean up of a similar model. Actually may be the same. Mine has pearl inlays around the sound hole. I bought it new in 1968 and have never really played it. Just bought it on a whim. Wondering what it is worth?

I have recently completed some minor restoration on an Ibanez Gourd shaped Model. The label states Ibanez, Made in Japan, and is serialized as "Maison 1881" with the production number of 805. When did Ibanez make the traditional Gourd or Bowl shaped model mandolin, and does anyone have any further information on this seemingly unusual model of an Ibanez Mandolin. The resonance of the sound is awesome. It also has a unique extension on the lower fret board that extends into the round sound hole that allows an additional octave and a half to the upper register. I am still attempting to determine the string height and bridge location to maximize the playability and sound of this great little instrument.

After closer evaluation, I agree that this is more of an interesting mandolin than I stated in my previous post. While there were 522F model mandolins produced, this mandolin has a more elaborate enlay design on the fretboard like the 525 models, but has the headstock of a 522 Gibson lawsuit era mandolin like the one that I have posted on my photobucket page. My guess is since this is obviously a 1975, pre lawsuit era mandolin, the 525 hadn't been fully designed and this mandolin recieved features of both models. Either way, it's a beautiful mandolin and I'm sure it's a little more collectible being not only being a prelawsuit era, but it's design was still evolving making it quite unique as well. Cheers !

This is a 522F model mandolin. While not nearly as common as the 522 Gibson A5 model mandolins, these were standard issued models from 75-78 for sure, maybe longer. Also, I want to comment on how much I love your sire. I have been coming here since it's inception, but decided to register today. I'm attaching a link to some of my Ibanez collection of banjos , mandolins and guitars. I have more vintage Ibanez banjos and mandolins that I need to upload, but it currently has a 1976 524, 1975 522 and a 1978 593 Tree of Life posted with a few electric Ibanez guitars and an Ibanez acoutic. I have several folders, but I thought some of this sites' readers might be interested in seeing my vintage Aria and Aria Proo II mandolins and banjos, being that they're very comparable and in most cases equal to the Ibanez instruments of this era in craftsmanship. materials, and overall quality. Cheers

I have a friend who is an original owner of an F-4 525. As far as I know it is still in mint condition. Haven't seen it recently, but it rarely comes out of its case.

I also have a pre-serial number 523. I'm the original owner. It was purchased at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA, USA probably around 1975. Except for two very tiny dings in the finish it is flawless. Neck is still straight as an arrow. Truss rod never adjusted. Has always had medium strings on it. It has no pick guard. It was missing when I bought it, and I declined to have it added as I liked the appearance without it. So far so good: No pick scratches on the top.

Someone recently asked what it was worth. I have no idea. It was what I cold afford at the time and I haven't followed prices, although the current Ibanez offerings are far less than the $565 I paid back in '75. Although I covet a couple of newer mandolins I've seen in stores, the prices are out of the question. I should have purchased the Gibson Lloyd Loar repro for $2000 when it was first introduced.
